Meet Jasmyn Garay

Jasmyn Garay grew up in the Newcastle area and completed her law degree at Newcastle University in 2020. Admitted to practise in 2021, she has brought three years of dedicated experience to her role at The Family Law Co. Jasmyn was drawn to family law from the outset of her career, attracted by its personal and people-oriented nature, which she found more fulfilling than her initial focus on property law.

Jasmyn is especially passionate about supporting victims of domestic violence. She understands the profound impact that family violence can have within the legal system and is committed to helping those affected navigate these challenging circumstances. She is acutely aware of how perpetrators can misuse the family law system to continue their abusive behaviour, and she works diligently to recognise and address these issues.

In her practice, Jasmyn has been involved in several high-stakes cases that highlight her expertise and dedication:

Division 1 Parenting Matter: Jasmyn represented a mother in an interim application and successfully obtained orders for a change of residence to the mother and supervised time with the father. This complex case involved cross-allegations of sexual abuse and previous orders that were disadvantageous to her client. Her strategic approach and attention to detail led to a reversal of the previous interim orders, emphasising her skill in advocating for her clients’ needs.

High-Profile Parenting Case: Jasmyn managed a complex parenting matter involving five parties, including the Department of Communities and Justice. This case, known to the media, dealt with significant risk factors such as drug use, criminal behaviour, and a coronial inquest into a parent’s death, showcasing her capability to handle highly sensitive and intricate cases.

Division 1 Property Matter: She also represented a wife in a property threshold hearing, successfully arguing for the acceptance of her property orders application filed two years out of time due to ongoing family violence by the husband.

Division 2 Parenting Matter: Jasmyn assisted the mother in filing an urgent application after the father unilaterally retained the child in contravention of final orders. The Court made a recovery order for the child to be returned to the mother. The proceedings were thereafter re-opened with both parents seeking sole parental responsibility and for the child to live with them. Throughout the proceedings, the father filed two Applications in a Proceeding and made an oral application for an urgent change of residence due to alleged unacceptable risk in the mother’s care, which Jasmyn successfully defended. Jasmyn argued that the father was utilising the Court system to perpetrate family violence. Further final orders were made for the child to live with the mother, for the mother to have sole decision-making, and for the child to spend less time with the father.

Known for her ability to think on her feet, Jasmyn also places great value on thorough preparation. She believes in providing honest and straightforward advice, ensuring her clients have a clear understanding of their situations and the next steps in their legal processes. Her kind and caring nature makes her clients feel supported and understood during often difficult times.

Jasmyn’s ambitions include continuing to tackle uniquely complex family law cases and pursuing a Master of Applied Law. She is dedicated to her professional development and expanding her expertise, particularly in matters involving domestic violence.

Outside of work, Jasmyn recently got married and enjoys quality time with her husband. She loves going to the beach and taking walks with her beloved Staffy, Frank. Jasmyn also takes pride in staying connected with friends, valuing her personal relationships as much as her professional ones.

Jasmyn’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality family law services, regardless of a client’s socio-economic status or location, makes her a valuable asset to The Family Law Co. Her continuous efforts to support her clients through their separation and make a positive impact in the family law system underscore her dedication and professionalism.
