Meet Amy Forwood

Following her admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and the High Court of Australia, Amy chose to practice exclusively in family law. She has worked on a variety of matters, including parenting and property disputes, divorce applications, surrogacy agreements, and adoption proceedings. Amy is particularly passionate about parenting disputes involving allegations of domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, mental ill-health, and parental alienation. Amy also excels in settling disputes, having a high settlement rate when representing clients in negotiations, mediation, family dispute resolution, and conciliation conferences. She is confident and meticulously prepared to ensure the best outcome for her clients.

Currently, Amy is pursuing a Master of Applied Law (Family Law), with one year completed and an expected graduation in mid-2025.

Since working at The Family Law Co., Amy has proven capable of taking carriage of matters of varying complexity – from straightforward consent orders to more complex parenting and property matters. The last year, in particular, has seen Amy achieve incredible outcomes for her clients, including successfully representing the Applicant in a Division 1 parenting dispute involving four parties and multiple risk factors. Amy’s involvement in the case was so impactful that Counsel remarked her “preparation in this case was excellent, without which, it is my view, our client’s position at the conclusion of the case could have been very different.”

Amy regularly receives praise from her clients, colleagues, and industry professionals for her professionalism and adeptness at gracefully navigating difficult situations.

“I just wanted to say thank you for your efforts again. Your reassurances and amiable demeanour kept the stress of a terrible situation to a minimum, and I can’t tell you how helpful that was.”

“For the past year the Family Law Co has been working with me. They are very supportive of my choices and have helped and guided me with making the right decisions for my daughter. They have been honest and friendly, and I can see they also want the best outcome for my daughter and myself. I can’t recommend them enough. They are also very quick with replying to any calls and emails I have.”

“Thank you is truly understated for you and your team’s efforts today, Amy. We are eternally thankful…”

Amy’s exemplary legal skills are reflected across several high-profile cases she has managed:

  • C & R – Division 1 Parenting Matter: In a two-year litigation, Amy represented a father who had not seen his child for four years. Interim orders initially placed the child with the mother, but due to her contravention of court orders, Amy successfully obtained a change of residence for the father. The child now resides with the father, has alternate weekends with the maternal grandparents, and has limited supervised contact with the mother. This case demonstrated Amy’s ability to confidently work within the law, executing quickly and effectively without adding to the conflict.
  • K & W – Division 2 Interim Relocation: Following domestic violence, the mother moved from NSW to Adelaide. Interim orders allowed the child to remain with the mother in Adelaide, with the father having supervised visits. The father’s application for review was dismissed, upholding the mother’s relocation and ensuring stability for the child in a safer environment. This showcased Amy’s ability to remain calm and confident in highly emotional matters.
  • Division 1 Parenting Matter: In this challenging case, Amy tackled severe risk factors, including the mother’s methamphetamine use and violent behaviour. The mother was incarcerated, and Amy successfully ensured that the children remained with their respective fathers, with no contact from the mother following her abduction attempt and subsequent incarceration. This case highlighted Amy’s adeptness at managing high-risk situations effectively, safeguarding the children’s welfare while navigating the complexities of family law.
  • D & D – Division 2 Property Matter: Amy managed a complex property matter involving a large asset pool and significant financial disclosure issues. Through extensive due diligence and negotiations, final consent orders were reached, securing a fair outcome despite significant waste by the husband to the value of $1.5m. This case demonstrated Amy’s ability to navigate intricate financial disputes effectively and achieve just resolutions for her clients.

Outside the office, Amy enjoys doting over her adorable nephews, swimming at her local rock pool, and challenging herself at reformer Pilates. Her interests give her a balanced lifestyle and endear her to her clients and colleagues, adding a personal touch to her professional relationships.

Amy’s commitment to her profession and the well-being of her clients shines through in every aspect of her work. Whether navigating complex legal challenges or advocating fervently in the courtroom, Amy’s dedication is a beacon for excellence in family law. Her ongoing pursuit of further education in family law also speaks volumes about her desire to remain at the forefront of legal practices, ensuring she provides the best possible service.

Amy’s trajectory at The Family Law Co. and her long-term legal career is marked by potential and promise. With her upcoming completion of a Master of Applied Law, her expertise will only deepen, broadening her capacity to handle even more complex cases with the same finesse and dedication that has become her hallmark.
